Cloud computing is a way of providing convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services). These can be configured, provisioned and released as needed. Simplistically, cloud computing is a combination of sophisticated and robust virtualisation run to IT best practices, presented to the user community through a web portal providing initiation, delivery, management and reporting.
Managed services provide an alternative to expensive on-premises infrastructure and applications, enabling organisations to move from a capital expense for equipment and multi-seat software licenses to a lower, recurring and predictable operating expense. The organisation transfers responsibility for all aspects of a specific service or services to a third party provider or partner. The services are provided as a cloud service with a management layer on top.
There are two significant differences between managed services and what we might term ‘vanilla’ cloud. With a vanilla cloud service, a third party provides capacity in their data centre, but the organisation still has to manage the service themselves – which, although it does not require infrastructure, needs skilled staff and the time to manage the service or services effectively on an ongoing basis.
The vanilla cloud service also does not include any application specific security or anything else tailored to the organisation’s specific needs. Many of the cloud services currently available are not yet able to handle all aspects of infrastructure and applications – especially when an organisation has 20 years’ worth of legacy infrastructure to consider.
Fordway also offers Cloud Intermediation Services – services and consultancy to assist at each stage of your cloud journey, from design and build to migration and management. These can be provided from your own data centres, third party facilities or public cloud, and can be integrated into a seamless service with common service management, common processes, unified monitoring and ideally common, standard SLAs for each defined service.
